• What is Differentiated Instruction?
It is adjusting the pace, the level, or the kind of instruction you provide in response to individual learner’s need. It is common sense and responsive teaching that maximizes the capacity of each learner by providing scaffolding for those who need it and an elevator for others.

The hallmarks of a differentiated classroom are:

    • A strong link between assessment and instruction
    • The teacher(s) are clear about learning goals
    • Students are grouped flexibly
    • Time, space, and materials are used flexibly
    • Teachers and students work together in community to make it work for everyone
    • Individual growth is integral to the success of the classroom
    • It is a “way up”, not a “way out”
    • Lessons are closely aligned with curriculum objectives and standards
    • Accountability is high as evidenced by authentic assessment tools
